Five Fall Favorites - Day 3: Historical Nonfiction

HAPPY HAPPY HUMP DAY! It's Wednesday (obviously) and the Five Fall Favorites party is basically half over! Like what?! Very sad. *cries* ANYWAY, today we're talking about probably my least-favorite genre of the week (don't kill me please *cringes*)—historical nonfiction. I . . . don't read much nonfiction. And historical nonfiction? Welllll . . . I was scrambling to find just five books in this genre. But I CONQUERED. (Also idek why I'm in this weird mood. But I'm sitting in an adorable little coffeehouse as I write this, and this makes me so HAPPY.)

What's your favorite outdoor activity? Reading? That's definitely one of mine! At the Literary Lodge, there's so many places you can read—and today I'm renting out the boats! So hop in, grab an oar, and enjoy the ride (and the books)!

30 Seconds Over Tokyo—Ted W. Lawson

When I picked this up from the library years ago, I had no idea what I was getting into. Some of the medical stuff made me slightly uncomfortable, but I was also fascinated! Ahh, I'd love to go get this one again.

The Hiding Place—Corrie ten Boom

C'mon, you had to know that this one was coming. Corrie's courage (and her family's!) is so inspiring.

A Thousand Shall Fall—Susi Hasel Mundy

A Thousand Shall Fall is a fascinating and courageous story about a Seventh-Day Adventist in Hitler's army. It also follows the story of his wife and family on the Homefront.

Basher Five-Two—Scott O'Grady

What would you do if your plane was shot down and you were stranded behind enemy lines by yourself? I don't want to know my answer to that question!

Sergeant York—John Perry

I love the story of Sgt. York. I can't tell you the number of times we've listened to the Adventures in Odyssey episodes featuring his life, and so it was super exciting when Mom got this book and read it aloud.

And, as always, don't forget about the giveaway!

  1. I’ve read “The Hiding Place,” but not the others—I’d love to though! They sound really good!

  2. I love Basher-Five-Two! So good! Also read theHiding Place, but I have a feeling I'll enjoy Return to the Hiding Place by Hans Poley more, since it deals more with the actual resistance work. And I totally want to check out the others you mentioned!

  3. Oh, I'm so with you, Kaitlyn - I hardly EVER pick up a piece of nonfiction to read just for fun. And my least favorite genre has got to be romance.
But okay . . . I'll admit I have read one or two nonfiction pieces and enjoyed them. "The Hiding Place" is one of these, as Corrie ten Boom is my favorite missionary. That book is really, really good! The other tidbit of nonfiction I've liked is "Hudson Taylor's Spiritual Secret." Have you ever read it?
    Thanks for this post!

No, I don't think I've read the Hudson Taylor book...I'll look into it! :)

  4. Some non-fiction I don't enjoy as much, but I like to know what really happened and if I have a good author, I enjoy it. :)
I've actually read 3 of your books! "The Hiding Place" (which is being recommended 4 times today and was mentioned on Monday), "Basher Five-Two", and "Sergeant York." :)

  12. I've only read the Hiding Place out of these! And I have to agree, Corrie's story is amazing to read (I put it on my list today too!). :D Historical non-fiction is one of my top genres :P
