Well hey, welcome back to Five Fall Favorites! (Also HELLO OCTOBER) Glad you decided to return for round 2! And if this is the first party post of mine that you've visited—thanks for stopping by! Today I've got five fabulous fiction works that take place outside the U.S. And it was actually surprisingly easy to come up with these!
I don't know about you, but I love reading outside. Especially with a slight breeze (not strong enough to tear your pages, of course), maybe with your favorite drink beside you. So join me! Let's go find a bench and do what we like best here at Five Fall Favorites.
Duncan's War—Douglas Bond
This was a book that my dad read aloud to the family when I was little . . . so of course I had to reread it a couple of years ago. This one takes place in . . . Ireland? *can't remember if it's Ireland or Scotland so looks it up* Whoops, I was wrong. It's Scotland. You'd think I'd have remembered with the kilts and all. ;P
Refiner's Fire—Sylvia Bambola
Taking place in Romania, Refiner's Fire starts out rather slowly. But then it pulls you into the story, and . . . it really gets you to thinking. About the true reason for living.
Cracker!—Cynthia Kadohata
Okay, so, I'm not usually one for books from an animal's point of view. But this one . . . in the swamps of Vietnam during the war, this book follows both Cracker's point of view and her handler. I won't say much more, but this is definitely a favorite animal-POV book.
His Watchful Eye—Jack Cavanaugh
I could SCREAM TO THE WORLD that JACK CAVANAUGH IS ONE OF MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE AUTHORS, but *cough* I won't. His Watchful Eye is the second book in the Songs in the Night trilogy (taking place in WWII Germany), and I strongly recommend that you read the books in order. But I love Konrad & Lisette's story so much.
The Bronze Bow—Elizabeth George Speare
Biblical fiction. Do I need to go any deeper than that?? Honestly though, I haven't read this book in so many years . . . I just remember that it's really good, so there's that.

Again, read none of these, but they all sound good!

ReplyDeleteI have to admit that I haven't read any of these books even though we have "Duncan's War" on our shelf. We might even have "The Bronze Bow" but I don't know. I don't think I've ever even heard of Jack Cavanaugh. Well, maybe I have. I know I've never looked at his books before, but maybe I should try him. :) Thanks for sharing!
